A transformative encounter: FHI360 engagement at Nyasa Rainbow Alliance

On 1st February 2024, FHI360’s Epic Global Technical Director, Dr. Chris Akolo visited Nyasa Rainbow Alliance (NRA) at its offices in Blantyre. The visit not only underscored the importance of collaboration between FHI360 and NRA but also showcased the profound impact such partnership has on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities in Malawi.

NRA has been a beacon of hope in advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights in Blantyre and Malawi as a whole, working tirelessly to promote equality, combat discrimination, and provide essential health services and support to the community. NRA’s mission aligns with broader goals of inclusivity and human rights, creating an environment where all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live free from discrimination and prejudice.

FHI360 has supported NRA for the past three years and is known for its unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that address social inequalities and expressed a keen interest in understanding the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in Malawi. Recognizing the critical role NRA plays in driving positive change, Dr. Chris Akolo’s visit was, among other things, meant to gain first-hand insights into the operations of the organization and its impact on the queer community.

The visit culminated in a reaffirmation of FHI360’s commitment to supporting NRA in its endeavors. This joint commitment is made to strengthen existing programs and to explore new initiatives aimed at advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, and health care services, and creating a more equitable society.

The visit ended with a tour of NRA’s offices, where Dr. Chris had the opportunity for one-on-one discussions with various departments of the organization. He also gained valuable perspectives on the specific challenges faced by the queer community in Malawi, as well as the successes and milestones achieved by the organization.

This visit not only highlighted the importance of partnerships between FHI360 and NRA, but also showcased the potential for positive change when organizations and individuals come together to champion a common cause. The commitment demonstrated during this visit reflects a shared dedication to creating a more inclusive and just society for the LGBTQIA+ community in Malawi.
