October is globally recognized as LGBTIQ+ History Month, a special time to celebrate the stories, struggles, and triumphs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people across generations.
For us at Nyasa Rainbow Alliance (NRA), it is also a moment to reflect on our journey in Malawi, one of courage, resilience, and unwavering hope. LGBTIQ+ History Month reminds us that our movement did not start today. It was built by brave individuals who dared to live authentically when it was neither safe nor accepted. Their acts of resistance from speaking out, forming communities, or simply existing proudly, laid the foundation for the freedoms we continue to fight for In Malawi and beyond. This month offers a chance to educate, engage, and inspire. It challenges society to see that LGBTIQ+ people have always been part of our nation’s history as teachers, artists, leaders, healers, and change makers. This year’s theme (HONOURING THE VOICES THAT PAVED THE WAY) calls us to acknowledge those who came before us, the silent trailblazers who made today’s conversations about equality possible. It also urges us to continue creating safe spaces for new voices, especially the youth, to share their stories and advocate for inclusion.
At NRA, we believe in celebrating those voices ,the activists, allies, and community members who keep pushing boundaries and nurturing pride in Malawi and across Africa. While we celebrate progress, we also recognise the challenges that remain. Many in our community still face stigma, discrimination, and violence. LGBTIQ+ History Month is a reminder that change requires all of us — standing together, speaking out, and refusing to be invisible.
Together, we can shape a Malawi where diversity is valued, and everyone can live freely, without fear or shame.
