Bridging Understanding: Nyasa Rainbow Alliance Engages with Parents of LGBTQIA+ Children

Nyasa Rainbow Alliance (NRA), with support from Arcus Foundation, convened with parents of children from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community, Malawi Human Rights Commission, Gender Justice Unit and Religious Leaders Network for Choice at Mafumu Hotel in Lilongwe on the 14th February 2024. This meeting was aimed at giving the parents of LGBTQIA+ children to express their challenges and share solutions for raising children that are different from the norm.

In a world where acceptance and understanding are paramount, the journey of LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families is often a complex and challenging one. However, amidst these challenges, NRA, a beacon of hope in the queer community, is dedicated to fostering acceptance and understanding within families, particularly among parents of LGBTQIA+ children.

At the heart of the mission, NRA commits to building bridges of understanding and acceptance. Recognizing the vital role that family plays in the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals, NRA and religious grounds extend their support beyond the individual, reaching out to parents who may be navigating unfamiliar terrain.

One such organization, a network of progressive faith leaders on LGBTQIA+ issues that has now been institutionalized in Malawi – Religious Leaders Network for Choice, made a significant presence to engage with parents of LGBTQIA+ at this conference. Religious Leaders Network for Choice and NRA have now dedicated a safe space for parents to explore their questions, concerns, and emotions surrounding their child’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Central to the success of this initiative of engaging parents is the creation of supportive communities; this is where the parents of LGBTQIA+ shared their experiences and learn from one another. NRA facilitated the parents of LGBTQIA+ individuals as a way to create a society where the individuals have a safe space and support from both the organization and each other.

Creating these safe spaces serves as invaluable sources of comfort and empowerment, allowing parents to express their thoughts and feelings openly without fear of judgment. Through shared experiences and mutual support, parents can gain a deeper understanding of their children’s identities and learn how to best support them on their journeys.

NRA equipped and shared knowledge with parents covering topics such as communication strategies, LGBTQIA+ terminology, and legal framework for protecting their children’s rights. This initiative will empower parents to create loving and affirming environments for their children by equipping parents with knowledge and skills.

The day ended with a testimonial from a parent who has an intersex child followed by words from Habiba Ousman from the Malawi Human Rights Commission, and Emma Kalea from the Gender Justice Unit who assured parents that they do have resources and support specifically catered for them to make use of. A brief panel discussion was held, where the parents asked relevant questions and raised concerns that occur from their children being part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Ultimately, the work of NRA, Religious Leaders Network for Choice, MHRC, and Gender Justice Unit in engaging with parents of LGBTQIA+ children is rooted in a simple yet powerful message: love and acceptance. By fostering understanding, providing support, and offering resources, these organizations help parents to embrace their children for who they are and to celebrate the unique gifts they bring to the world.

As Malawi continues to evolve, the efforts of NRA in engaging with parents play a vital role in creating a more inclusive and accepting society for all. Through compassion, empathy, and a commitment to building bridges of understanding, these conversations inspire hope and pave the way for a brighter future for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families. This dialogue was the first of its kind and NRA is hopeful and encouraged to have parents at the forefront of activism within the LGBTQIA+ community as the chain of acceptance starts right at home.
