Introducing Equal Rights In Action (ERA) Project

We are excited to announce that we have received support from Equal Rights In Action (ERA) Fund to implement a project which seeks to enhance protection, respect, and enjoyment of rights by LGBTQIA+ individuals in Malawi.

The implementation of project commenced on July 17th when Nyasa Rainbow Alliance hosted a pivotal training session at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe which focused on empowering grassroots organizations in human rights and corporate governance. This landmark event brought together activists and advocates from across the region, aiming to strengthen the foundational knowledge and operational capabilities of local groups working towards equality and justice. The training was part of a broader initiative to support and enhance the effectiveness of grassroots movements in advocating for the rights and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Malawi.

The comprehensive workshop covered a range of essential topics, including the fundamentals of human rights, legal frameworks protecting LGBTQIA+ rights, and the intricacies of corporate governance. Participants were equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the complex socio-political landscape in Malawi, where LGBTQIA+ rights are often contested and marginalized. By focusing on both human rights and corporate governance, the training aimed to ensure that grassroots organizations are not only aware of the rights they are fighting for but also adept at managing their internal structures efficiently and transparently.

Facilitators included experienced human rights lawyers and seasoned activists who shared their insights and practical advice. Interactive sessions allowed participants to engage in discussions and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities they might face in their advocacy work. The collaborative environment also provided a platform for networking, enabling participants to form alliances and share resources, further strengthening the community of activists dedicated to LGBTQIA+ rights in Malawi.

The impact of the training is expected to resonate beyond the confines of the Crossroads Hotel, as participants return to their communities armed with enhanced capabilities and renewed motivation. This initiative underscores the importance of continuous education and support for grassroots organizations, recognizing that sustainable change is built on the foundation of knowledgeable and well-governed advocacy groups. By empowering these local entities, NRA took a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and just society in Malawi.
