LEGAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE ENGAGEMENT

Nyasa Rainbow Alliance Engages Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament on LGBTIQ-Related Issues.

On October 17, 2024, Nyasa Rainbow Alliance, with support from The Other Foundation , hosted a roundtable dialogue with the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament at Joma Adventure Lodge in Salima.

The dialogue brought together all committee members and key stakeholders to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTIQ community due to Penal Code provisions that criminalize consensual same-sex relationships between adults in private.

Participants highlighted how the disproportionate enforcement of Section 153 of the Penal Code fuels discrimination, violence, and social exclusion of LGBTIQ individuals in Malawi.

Committee members thanked Nyasa Rainbow Alliance and The Other Foundation for organizing the dialogue, acknowledging that it has exposed gaps in law enforcement.

Members of the Committee also stressed the significance of ensuring that laws passed in Parliament do not target specific individuals or perpetuate injustice.

The session concluded with a collective commitment to ensuring that Section 153 of the Penal Code is being enforced in accordance with the spirit of the law.
